What is a Volcanic Roller & Do I Need One?

What’s a Volcanic Roller?
It’s a mattifying, oil-absorbing product for your face. We know the word volcanic in this context might seem a bit weird, but it’s a surprisingly great cosmetic ingredient!

Volcanic lava (also known as volcanic rock) is a rich source of minerals like silicon, oxygen, magnesium, and iron – all of which are essential for soft and radiant skin and often used in many exfoliators.

But in this instance, the volcanic rock’s main attraction is that it’s full of bubbles and holes that essentially represent little pockets of porous holes that’ll trap oils.

These microscopic pores effectively absorb all excess sebum – which is what gives it such good mattifying properties.

So, the product itself doesn’t really need anything else to mattify the face. There’s no powder or anything else drying inside of it – all the oil-absorbing properties come from the rock itself so it’s 100% safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

How Does Volcanic Stone Roller Work?
The tool consists of a small volcanic stone ball and a handle. The tool is really simple and easy to use – you just roll it all over the areas on the face that need some shine reduction.

After passing the rollerball back and forth over the skin a few times, you’ll notice the oily spots disappear like magic. The volcanic stone roller absorbs excess sebum from the skin’s surface – without disrupting your makeup!

The best part is you don’t layer anything on top of your skin. Caking your face in layers and layers of mattifying powders can clog up your pores and lead to breakouts and blemishes. This is especially true if your skin is acne-prone.

But just to let you know to keep your expectations realistic – the mattifying effect doesn’t last all day because, like any oil-absorbing product, how long that mattifying effect lasts depends on your specific skin type and how much oil it produces so you will need to use again.

How to Clean a Volcanic Roller
Any volcanic stone roller is incredibly easy to clean and maintain.

To clean it just unscrew the very top of it, remove the stone from the handle and rinse it with gentle soap and warm water. Then just let it air dry fully before putting it back into the handle. Voila! It’s ready to be used time and time again.

The frequency of cleaning really depends on usage. In general, the more you use it, the more frequently you should wash it. For example, if you use it daily, you should wash it at least once a week.

The oil absorbing roller is made to be a sustainable swap for blotting sheets, but it’s worth noting that it’s not a product that will last forever.

At some point, the volcanic roller will lose its efficiency and oil spots will start to appear after the stone wears off. This is a sign to get a new one.
