Why Do We Get Wrinkles

When you think of wrinkling and other signs of aging, your first thought may be your beautiful face. While facial skin is often one of the first places where humans see the signs of aging, the delicate skin on other areas of the body is just as vulnerable to the passage of time. Décolleté wrinkles, or chest wrinkles, also begin to make their appearances as people age. Although some people believe that aging gracefully requires welcoming wrinkles into their lives, the reality is that several non-surgical methods of wrinkle reduction exist in today's world, allowing you to look gorgeous at any age without laying down when wrinkles arrive.

What Causes Wrinkles?

There is no one-size-fits-all diagnosis to account for the reasons wrinkles appear. Age is often a contributing factor, but other elements may attribute to these lines and crevices, as well. Sun damage, pollution, gravity, environmental toxins, and bad habits each tend to hold their own place of blame in the world of wrinkles. It's possible that sleeping on one's side may even contribute to décolleté wrinkles, as this position may cause the fragile skin of the chest to endure tugging, pulling, and folding throughout the night.

There are two main factors that cause wrinkles to form: Diminished hydration and a reduction of collagen production. Hydration and collagen are responsible for keeping skin elastic and firm. As these elements lessen with age, so, too, does the skin's ability to stay pliable and taut, causing wrinkles to appear.

THE TOP SIX CAUSES OF WRINKLES

  1. SUN EXPOSURE

The sun’s UV rays cause free radicals to form in the layers of your skin. Free radicals damage your skin’s elastin fibres, which contributes to wrinkles and skin cancer. 

  1. SMOKING

Smoking increases the number of free radicals in your body’s cells which can cause your skin to age prematurely. 

  1. POOR NUTRITION

Depriving your body of nutrient-rich foods can affect the health and strength of your skin. A diet full of highly-processed foods won’t make your skin as strong and supple as it could be2. Nutrient-rich foods like, oily fish, protein and, fresh fruit and vegetables contain the vitamins and minerals your skin needs to maintain it’s soft, youthful glow. 

  1. DEHYDRATION

Collagen is the primary connective tissue in your skin and it’s mostly made up of water. When you become dehydrated collagen molecules can crack and clump together, causing wrinkles to form on your skin’s surface. 

  1. NOT USING AN ANTI-WRINKLE CREAM

If your skin care routine doesn’t contain anti-wrinkle creams, you could be depriving your skin of the nutrients it needs to remain elastic and strong. 

  1. FEELING STRESSED OR TIRED

When you’re stressed or tired, your body releases excess cortisol, a hormone which is known to cause premature skin aging and wrinkles.
