Why To Use A Clay Mask

If there's any one skincare trend that's risen heads and shoulders (literally) above the rest in the last decade, it would undoubtedly have to be the highly Instagrammable clay mask.
And while clay masks of all varieties and hues have become synonymous with social media's version of self-care, it's certainly worth asking: How do they actually work?

So, to spare you the painstaking research, we did a little deep dive into exactly what clay masks do, how they work and who should be using them. Scroll on for everything you need to know.

WHAT DO CLAY MASKS ACTUALLY DO?
Clays help to detoxify the skin and draw out impurities and oils from the surface of the skin.  This is especially helpful to those people with acne or oily-prone skin.  While clay masks can help to detoxify the skin, the product also has hydrating and oil absorption benefits.  IIt helps draw out the impurities as well as absorb excess oils that are on the surface of the skin. Additionally, it helps reduce excess shine.

HOW DO CLAY MASKS WORK?
Clay masks work by soaking up anything and everything that may be clogging up your skin.  After application of a clay mask, you will feel your face tighten as the clay dries. As the clay dries it "soaks" up the skins natural oils and anything clogging the pores and draws it to the surface.

SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU BE ON BE LOOK OUT FOR?
When choosing a clay mask, it's good to look for one specific ingredient, Kaolin is an important ingredient to be on the lookout for. Also know as white clay, Kaolin is quite mild, and can help to draw out oils without being harsh on the skin.  In terms of important ingredients, look for kaolin and/or bentonite as superior ingredients for these types of masks.  Bentonite and kaolin clay also draw out water and oil from your skin, which may temporarily make pores appear smaller.

HOW DO YOU MAXIMIZE ITS IMPACT?
A clay mask will have maximum impact when it's followed by your regular skincare routine, so don't forget to cleanse and moisturise after removing the clay.
